Hand car washes

I’ve seen that the cheap £10 hand car washes aren’t too popular on this sub.
I’ve seen a few posts directing to them as “scratch and saves”, as apparently, they use dirty clothes that scratch the life out of your paintwork.

Are they really that bad?

I have a fairly new car, and I like its color. Unfortunately, I don’t have a driveway, so I do not have the luxury of washing it myself.
In my position, is it better to give it to a hand car wash once or twice a year, or to not get it washed at all?
